daily cleansing ritual

Cleansing  is an important part of maintaining healthy vibrant skin, even if you don't wear makeup. Yeah, you read that right, even if you don't wear makeup.  The skin is a protective barrier.  It constantly interacts with your physical environment filtering UV rays,  keeping bacteria and micro organisms out and water in, regulating body temperature and so many other things! Environmental toxins are at an all time high and your skin interacts with them on a daily basis. Supporting the skin health is more important now than ever.

Water is a good way to eliminate some of the daily toxin buildup from the surface of the skin however, in order to really support and strengthen the skin, it's best to cleanse with an actual cleanser.

I prefer the oil cleansing method since it keeps the skins natural pH balance intact. Oils like hazelnut actually help to absorb toxic material on the surface of the skin.  Oils have the capacity to dissolve dirt while keeping the skin soft and supple. Oil cleansing is therapeutic and suitable for all skin types, especially oily skin. Continuous use of drying agents on oily skin actually weakens the pH, leaving it more susceptible to bacteria which leads to more break outs and also tends to stimulate the skin to create more oil (for protection). Oil cleansing is easy and leaves the skin soft and supple.

luminous beauty also provides a gentle foaming cleanser for those that prefer a more traditional feel while cleansing.  I like this one too, especially in the summer.  It leaves the skin feeling soft and clean. The pH of sudsing cleansers is more alkaline than your skin, that's what makes them cleanse.  Even if they are gentle, it's very important to use a toner afterwards to restore the acid mantle (protective barrier) of your skin.

How to Cleanse - Oil Cleanser

1. Fill a clean basin with warm water.  Add a drop of an essential oil such as lavender, geranium or lemon. (use only therapeutic grade oils and be aware some oils are too strong to use undiluted in water).

2. Using your hands or a clean wash cloth moisten skin with water form your basin - breathe in deeply, become present to this moment, the sensation & sounds of the water, the aroma of the oil. Hint: the essential oils from step one will assist in opening the breath & becoming present.

3. Take 1-2 pumps of oil cleanser and massage into the skin using circular motions.  Notice where there is extra tension (i.e. forehead or jaw) and spend a little more time massaging there, as well as any places that are "trouble spots". Begin to work the cleanser down your neck and even onto your décolleté (chest).  Use gentle downward pumping motions here, especially just below the jaw where your lymph nodes are. This will help stimulate and drain the lymph—an important detoxifying system,

4. Use your hands & or clean wash cloth, to rinse with water from the basin.  I tend to also massage while doing this.

5. Follow with a little splash of cool water.

6. Look at your glowing skin in the mirror.  Exhale, feel gratitude for your glowing skin.

How to Cleanse - Gentle Foaming Cleanser

1. Fill a clean basin with warm water.  Add a drop of an essential oil such as lavender, geranium or lemon. (use only therapeutic grade oils, and be aware some oils are too strong to use undiluted in water).

2. Using your hands or a clean wash cloth moisten skin with water form your basin—breathe in deeply, become present to this moment, the sensation & sounds of the water, the aroma of the oil. Hint: the essential oils from step one will assist in opening the breath & becoming present.

3. Shake your foaming cleanser well - this will activate the ingredients.  Pump a small amount into your moist hands, rub them together to create foam.

4. Massage foaming cleanser into face using light circular movements. Spend extra time on areas where you notice tension (i.e. forehead, jaw). Begin to work the cleanser down your neck and even onto your décolleté (chest).  Use gentle downward pumping motions here, especially just below the jaw where your lymph nodes are. This will help stimulate and drain the lymph—an important detoxifying system,

5. Using your hands splash water from the basin on your face to rinse off the cleanser.

6. Splash a little cool water over your face.

7. Finish by spraying or splashing with your favorite toner. I recommend Queens Water or Essential Toner with rose and chamomile.

8. Look at your radiant skin in the mirror, exhale feel gratitude for your skin.
